Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy or, also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy, is one of the operations applied to get rid of obesity and concomitant diseases caused by obesity. Sleeve gastrectomy, which is growing in popularity every day due to being reliable and comfortable, as well as getting results in a short time, can improve the quality of life of people with the right choice of patients and good practice, moreover, it can be a way out for them to get rid of many diseases.

How is sleeve gastrectomy performed?

Gastric sleeve surgery performed under general anesthesia in a full-fledged hospital is an surgery that restricts food intake and decreases stomach volume. In this surgery, a new stomach with a smaller volume is created by safely cutting and removing the curved part, which corresponds to approximately 70-80% of the stomach, by means of stapler. This is the main point where sleeve gastrectomy differs from Gastric bypass surgery, which is another surgery used in the treatment of obesity. While a new nutrtion tract is created in gastric bypass surgeries, a part of the stomach is only rendered dysfunctional, the non-functional part remains in the patient idle. However, in sleeve gastrectomy, after the new small volume stomach is created, the unused part of the stomach is removed. The stomach, of which curved part is removed, is turned into a thin tube. Thanks to the shrinking stomach volume, food intake is reduced and the patient starts to lose weight fast after the surgery. Although this process lasts for approximately 1 year, the amount of weight lost varies from patient to patient. In all gastric surgery performed with the laparoscopic method, which we call the closed method, large incisions are not made in the patient’s abdomen. In this way, the recovery time is much shorter and more comfortable.

Who is eligible for sleeve gastrectomy?

It is suitable for all patients with a body mass index of 40 and above, who have concomitant diseases related to obesity, above the age of 18 and who do not have any health problems that prevent taking anesthesia.

What are the disadvantages of sleeve gastrectomy?

We can say that the biggest advantage of sleeve gastrectomy is also its disadvantage. The part that distinguishes sleeve gastrectomy from other methods is that the remaining parts of the old stomach are removed from the body after the new stomach is formed. This is an advantage because the patient can be fully scanned in case of a gastric problem and then problems such as dumping syndrome or ulcers do not occur. However, this situation is also a disadvantage because this makes sleeve gastrectomy an irreversible operation.

Are there any risks of sleeve gastrectomy?

As with any surgical operation, sleeve gastrectomy has small risks as well. Although there are always risks such as leakage and bleeding in the stomach, these risks are very low when the surgery is performed in a prominent center by a competent surgeon.
