Diabetes is one of the most common diseases seen in a society. The most common treatment method of diabetes, which causes heart, vascular and kidney diseases that negatively affects the quality of life of the person if not treated carefully, is an effective diet and exercise program. However, in some cases, diet and exercise programs are not sufficient due to the patient’s vital habits and self-discipline and the progression of the disease, therefore surgical intervention is required.

The name of the procedures known as diabetes surgery is metabolic surgery in the literature. Metabolic surgery is basically a set of procedures involving changing food pathways and regulating the secretion of hormones that trigger diabetes.

Diabetes occurs when the person’s pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the insulin produced is ineffective due to the resistance it encounters in the body. It is possible to successfully recover from this situation, in which the patient is affected both physically and psychologically, with metabolic surgery.

Metabolic surgery is an operation that positively affects the quality of life as it not only regulates sugar in patients with excessive weight gain as a result of type 2 diabetes, but also eliminates obesity by helping the person to lose weight, since it also includes the removal of the fundus part of the stomach as required by the procedure procedure.

How is metabolic surgery decided?

We cannot say that a person is suitable for direct metabolic surgery just by considering their diabetes. The patient must undergo a detailed examination, perform tests, and have a medical history suitable for surgery (for example, there should be no obstacle to anesthesia, etc.) If there is no obstacle to the person from having this surgery as a result of the examinations, a suitable date is determined for the surgery.

How are metabolic surgery operations performed?

Metabolic surgery operations are performed under general anesthesia and require a few days in the hospital. A metabolic surgery has two stages basically. The first is the intervention to the stomach and the second is the intervention to the small intestine. In metabolic surgery, the part of the stomach called the fundus is removed, which is the part where the Ghrelin hormone, also known as the hunger hormone, is secreted. Successful completion of this part of the surgery is the part that will help the person better control the urge to eat in the postoperative period. The second part of metabolic surgery is the part where the small intestine is intervened. At this stage of the surgery, a nutrition tract is created between the last part of the small intestine and the stomach. Thus, the hormones secreted in the small intestine in the early stages of digestion are ensured to increase positively.

Metabolic surgery operations are reliable and comfortable operations, which increase the quality of life of the person as they help the person to get rid of diabetes. Depending on the whole of the procedures to be performed, metabolic surgery, which can take 2-3 hours, is mostly progressed by laparoscopic methods; large incisions are not made. This especially helps the healing process to be comfortable.
